Akwaaba.
Welcome.
We are dedicated to helping children, at-risk adolescents, and adults in rural Ghana — building a permanent home for education and health in Akyem Hemang, one classroom, clinic visit, and library shelf at a time.
Education & Literacy
Library access, school supplies, and technology so every child in Akyem Hemang can learn without limits.
Health & Wellness
Vision care, general medical support, and community health screenings for families who need it most.
Community & Opportunity
Safer streets, athletic equipment, and life-skills training that build stronger, more self-reliant villages.
Why We Exist
The Village Communities Development Organization is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the United States and Ghana, West Africa — founded to establish a dedicated rural community center for educational development in Akyem Hemang and its surrounding villages.
The Challenge
- School fees are out of reach for many families — and children often walk great distances just to reach a classroom or find a book.
- Even in school, resources are scarce. Outdated materials and ill-equipped classrooms are common — yet students stay diligent and determined to learn.
- Healthcare and hygiene essentials that are taken for granted elsewhere remain unaffordable or inaccessible for many Ghanaians.
Our Goal
A center to serve the community — plain and simple.
- Educate, encourage, and enhance welfare through seminars, workshops, and hands-on learning.
- Establish a library, technology, and resource center with books and safe spaces to study.
- Expand health advice and education for adults and young adults continuing their studies.
- Build the life and work skills people need to fully support themselves.
Who Is Maama?
Our grandmother, Maama, instilled a drive to learn — not only in her own children, but in every child she could reach in Akyem Hemang. She pushed everyone she taught to always do their best, and never to settle for a C.
Our matriarch, Felicia Asare, carried that same drive — and the desire to give back — guiding all four of her children from babies into college graduates in the United States. One dream stayed with her: to pass that drive to succeed on to the children of Hemang, in Maama's spirit. So she founded the Village Communities Development Organization to make it real.
"Sankofa — go back and get it." We honor where we come from to build what comes next.
What Your Support Has Already Built
Thanks to generous partners and individuals, VCDC has delivered real, tangible support to the people of Akyem Hemang — mainly children and the future of the village.
Care the Community Can Count On
- Vision Care: Ocular lenses & ophthalmic drugs, donated with New York Presbyterian Hospital and delivered to Hawa Memorial Savior Hospital, Osiem.
- General Care: Antibiotics donated to Akyem Hemang Community Clinic.
- Hospital Bedding: Beds & mattresses provided to Akyem Hemang Community Clinic.
- Health Screenings: With the Auspice Collective, 300+ residents screened for blood pressure, sinus infections, and prescription needs.
- Mosquito Repellent & Nets: Provided with our partner, Could You?
- Menstrual Cups: Annual donations with Could You? for girls graduating middle school — helping girls stay in school, period.
Safer Streets for Every Family
In 2026, VCDC broke ground on the first speedbumps in Akyem Hemang — placed near the elementary and middle schools, the palace, and town entry points, built to last with a quarry dust and cement mixture.
- Built in direct response to a tragedy in a neighboring village — our communities act, not wait.
- Next up: masons are waiting for the rains to slow before finishing the remaining stretch.
Equipping the Next Generation
- Athletic Equipment: Soccer jerseys, balls & shorts donated by the Valley Athletic Association (Bensalem, PA).
- 2026: New jerseys for both girls' and boys' volleyball and soccer teams, plus new equipment for each.
- Sewing Machines: Delivered to support local tailors and seamstresses in Akyem Hemang.
Opening Doors to the Digital World
- New Computer Lab: 10 laptops installed in a local Akyem Hemang school.
- Adobe Creative Cloud: Software access so students and local creatives can design and build.
- Books & Learning Materials: Pencils, bookcases, and shelves stocked for local classrooms.
